(Hurricane Helene really did a number on us…but she didn’t win)
If you’ve stayed with us recently or messaged asking about the farmstay WiFi, you probably noticed we’ve been a little… off the grid. That’s because back in September, Hurricane Helene knocked out our internet, and not just at the Airbnb.
The storm caused widespread outages across western North Carolina (this article shows just how far-reaching it was), and yep, we were very much part of that.
In fact, we lost WiFi at three different buildings:
– Our home
– The barn
– The Airbnb
If you want to read more about how we rode out that storm and the aftermath, we shared the full story here on the blog.
We eventually scraped together the funds for Starlink at the house, mostly because my husband relies on it for work. But the cost of getting separate Starlink setups for the barn and the Airbnb? On top of everything else going on? Just wasn’t possible at the time.
Why? Well…
During Helene, we also had the landslide…
We had to buy an excavator just to start fixing that mess once we were able to figure a way out since our driveway was blocked. Between that, other repairs from trees falling, and trying to keep everything running, adding two more Starlink setups would’ve been like asking the goats to start contributing to the mortgage.
So we held on, went full pioneer mode, and kept welcoming guests the old-fashioned way: with warm beds, great views, and no WiFi. Thankfully folks didn’t mind the digital detox.

WiFi Returns to the Farmstay!
BUT! We’re happy to report the farmstay WiFi is back and better than ever.
You can now:
- Check your email with coffee on the porch
- Post that dreamy barn sunset in real-time
- And yes, even stream a little Netflix under the twinkle lights
The charm of the farm is still alive and well…roosters, cows, Teddy the Farm Dog, and all, but now you’ve got the best of both worlds: peace and connection.
Thanks to everyone who stayed with us during this wild ride. We truly appreciate you. Now that the WiFi’s back, we’re ready to welcome even more of you to come unwind (and maybe update your apps while you’re here…or not).
With muddy boots and gratitude,
Jennifer
P.S. Teddy says he didn’t need the internet anyway.
